GFB TDM-Process-Model©

Building on our many years of experience in test data management, GFB Consulting und Services GmbH has developed a procedure model for setting up a test data management system like a project.
Step by step, these stages describe what is required to successfully reach your goal—from planning, recording your ACTUAL state, and defining your objectives to implementing processes, selecting/introducing tools, defining roles, and much more.

The stages present the necessary course of action along with the basic principles and techniques supporting this process. To round off our method, this approach takes on a technical perspective of test data management while also describing the project manager’s tasks across the project stages in the TDM environment.
This enables us to provide enterprises with a tried and tested, flexible procedure model for introducing a test data management system. The GFB TDM-Process-Model© helps to significantly reduce the planning effort for introducing/adapting a test data management system.

GFB TDM-6-Step-Model©

Well functioning test data management passes through several processes. The GFB TDM-6-Step-Model© shows the individual levels of the tried and tested target process of GFB’s test data management. Using the GFB TDM-6-Step-Model© provides enterprises with a time-tested end-to-end model of continuous test data management, customised to the enterprise requirements before its introduction to achieve an optimum result for test data coverage.

Level 1 | Analysis and Definition

Level 1 consists of analysing the requirements on the test data to be created and of evaluating the affected data sources / data sinks. In addition, it defines the objectives of test data management and examines the framework conditions of test data generation and provisioning (such as business processes, system architecture, data and transaction volumes).

Level 2 | Test Data Generation

Based on the results of level 1, level 2 designs how to generate the actual test data. Depending on the analysis result, it defines a suitable generation strategy (such as synthetic generation, sub-setting, or anonymization of production data) for the various data sources and targets.

Level 3 | Test Data Provisioning

In level 3 we define the necessary steps for provisioning the generated test data. Typically, this includes deploying existing data to the target systems, updating time stamps and/or performing “time journeys” for the affected test data, or converting existing data into another format.

Level 4 | Test Data Comparison

Comparing the created test data and/or “result data” of the performed tests in subsequent test cycles is essential to determine whether the test results are correct and the test objectives have been achieved.

Level 5 | Test Data Documentation

Test data documentation is an important component of the test data management process to ensure re-usability of created test data and to prove proper generation and provisioning of test data for defined test cases.

Level 6 | Test Data Archiving

Similar to test data documentation, test data archiving is an essential component of test data management for repeated and traceable execution of past testing scenarios to, e.g., enable repetition of a past test under exactly the same conditions (for compliance reasons, for instance).

The GFB TDM-Modular-Concept© describes the total end-to-end process for setting up GFB’s test data management system. This total approach consists of the individual modules from the GFB TDM-Modular-Concept©, which you can use in their entirety or combine individually to universally implement a TDM project.

When designing a test data management process, there are always “SMART” targets to be achieved. These targets—or success criteria—are made measurable within the TDM-Cockpit© and monitored before, during, and after introducing the test data management system.
